SUMMARY:CAPTURING OUR TOWN via plein air
DESCRIPTION:The KAC is offering twice monthly outdoor art events (June through August) that give artists a chance to get together and creatively capture the scenery\, people and feeling of the Kenai/Soldotna Area.  This project has two purposes: \n1: Offer outdoor events that support and encourage artists to create bonds within the art community. \n2. Encourage artists  to create plein air works for submission for the upcoming call for art show titled OUR TOWN scheduled for March 2027. \nJune 6th Location:  \nThe Kenai Kite Festival (Millennium Square Park\, frontage Rd/Bridge Access\, Kenai) \nTime: 11:00–3:00 \nInstructions  for Artists: \nJoin local artists outside while we create art that captures a sense of where we wander\, rest\, socialize\, recreate and live. Grab your easels\, paint brushes\, paints\, camera\, sketchpad\, paper\, scissors\, glue\, or whatever you use to render scenes and spend some time outdoors with art friends capturing the unique character of Kenai and Soldotna.  \nSpots in old town Kenai\, the Kenai bluffs\, the kite festival\, Soldotna Creek Park\, local historical sites and other places will be where we come together as artists and the community becomes our subject matter for “the canvas”.  \nSign in at every plein air location with our event coordinator and you can be part of the group that will be invited to submit works for the March 2027 show titled CAPTURING OUR TOWN.* At this opening reception in March we will be partnering up with the Kenai River Brewing Co to launch a new beer at this annual beer launch fundraiser.  \nMore opening reception and call for art details coming in the future! \nFor more detailed instructions and plein air event dates and locations:https://kenaiartcenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Capturing-OUR-TOWN-via-Plein-Air-2.pdf \n  \nMore details about the City of Kenai Annual Kite Festival: https://www.facebook.com/events/millennium-park/kenai-kite-festival/1291678322902462/ \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:JUST OUR TYPE featuring artists Meezie Hermansen and Kimberly Lorentzen
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our back gallery starting on November 14th for this two woman show titled JUST OUR TYPE. \nMeezie Hermansen and Kimberly Lorentzen will bring this interactive show to the KAC and in their words this exhibit is “intended to celebrate the written word and the themes of human experience in our community. We are together\, just our type of community…There is currently\, world-wide\, a resurgence of appreciation for the beauty of the manual typewriter as an elegant machine and of the physical experience of using it in a world that has become increasingly digital and virtual.”  \nIn the preceding months to the show opening\, be on the lookout for for staged public-use typewriters around town in coffee shops\, bookstores\, etc with invitations to share thoughts that will then be on display at this interactive exhibit. \nTheir idea was inspired by conversations asking the following questions: \n\nIf art heals\, can it heal the neglect of our physical bodies brought about by our minds’ engagement with a largely virtual world?\nCan the act of sharing thoughts publicly heal the separation that members of a community can feel in a society that has become increasingly divided along ideological lines in digital and virtual public discourse?\n\nThis show will open in tandem with the Mural Show opening reception in the main gallery on November 14th and will run thought December 19th. \nAbout the artists: \nMeezie Hermansen is a lifelong Cook Inlet setnetter and a small animal veterinarian with a love for the craft of writing.  This has brought her to the world of vintage typewriters.  Here\, she rediscovered the magic of seeing words appear physically in the world in real time\, with no easy editing\, resulting in a slower but more distilled writing process. \nKimberly Lorentzen grew up in rural Alaska where the village pace left plenty of time for curiosity and discovery. Whether writing\, painting\, or working in clay\, her goal is to showcase small wonders that are often missed\, to point at tiny marvels and yell\, “LOOK!” to anyone nearby. She uses whatever is at her disposal to do it.  She caught typewriter fever from her friend\, Meezie\, over long conversations about the trend toward all things fast and digital. \n

Rivers wind through our towns and our lives–whether we spend time on them or around them. Rivers connect us. We hope our CLAY ON DISPLAY–RIVER show encourages you to think about how the river plays a role in your life and the community around us. Join us as we celebrate the river and the creative current infused clay.” \nJoin us in the main gallery for the 2025 Potters Guild exhibition titled CLAY ON DISPLAY–RIVER. This annual event has become a much anticipated and loved show that brings locals and visitors alike. The KPG mission statement of  “Learn\, Create\, Pass It On” has been very apparent over the years as the guild has been involved in teaching pottery skills\, volunteering and helping at the local food pantry\, and creating for show and sales thoughtful\, utilitarian\, and beautiful works of art in clay for over 50 years. \nLearn more about the Kenai Potters Guild here: \n

SUMMARY:Kenai Plein Air Group Paint Out
DESCRIPTION:Let’s kick off the weekend with a little plein air! As we head into Autumn the Kenai River Flats are becoming a riot of color. I especially like the views here in the golden light at the end of the day. Bring whatever plein air supplies you like\, snacks\, drinks\, and if you want\, a chair or sit-upon. I’ve set the event time for 5 pm to 8 pm but stay and paint/draw as long as you like. Sunset that evening is at 8:15 pm. Just a heads up\, there are no restrooms at this location… there are bushes and tall grass though. \n– Alisia Sarren
