SUMMARY:AUGUST ABUNDANCE with artist Sara Allen in our back gallery
DESCRIPTION:We would like to welcome artist Sarah Allen to our back gallery for the month of August. \nSara Allen is an Alaska artist and founder of Laughing Lupin Studios. After more than two\ndecades working in Alaska’s tourism industry\, she now creates art full-time from her\nhome studio in Anchorage with her dog Bobber & her husband Nick cheering her on.\nInspired by Alaska’s wildflowers\, changing seasons\, and the beauty hidden within everyday\nchaos. Sara creates vibrant acrylic and mixed-media paintings filled with bold color\, layered\ntextures and expressive mark-making. While flowers often appear throughout her work\,\nher paintings are less about specific plants and more about capturing the feeling of joy\,\nwonder\, resilience\, and connection to place.\nAugust is Alaska at its fullest. The last of the salmon runs\, berries fat and ready for\nplucking\, gardens overflowing and the fireweed turning to fluff. Woven into that abundance is the quiet\nknowledge that the season is already beginning to turn. The first hints of autumn appear\, reminding us how\nfleeting these bright days truly are.\nAugust Abundance celebrates this uniquely Alaskan moment\, when nature is overflowing\, the light still\nlingers late into the evening\, and we are invited to savor the richness of the season before it slips gently\ntoward fall.\nYou can find Sara’s art year-round at Tiny Gallery downtown Anchorage and in Girdwood\, at the Girdwood\nCenter for Visual Arts as well as local fairs\, markets and on her website. \n \nAUGUST ABUNDANCE will run through Friday August 28th.

SUMMARY:JUST OUR TYPE featuring artists Meezie Hermansen and Kimberly Lorentzen
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our back gallery starting on November 14th for this two woman show titled JUST OUR TYPE. \nMeezie Hermansen and Kimberly Lorentzen will bring this interactive show to the KAC and in their words this exhibit is “intended to celebrate the written word and the themes of human experience in our community. We are together\, just our type of community…There is currently\, world-wide\, a resurgence of appreciation for the beauty of the manual typewriter as an elegant machine and of the physical experience of using it in a world that has become increasingly digital and virtual.”  \nIn the preceding months to the show opening\, be on the lookout for for staged public-use typewriters around town in coffee shops\, bookstores\, etc with invitations to share thoughts that will then be on display at this interactive exhibit. \nTheir idea was inspired by conversations asking the following questions: \n\nIf art heals\, can it heal the neglect of our physical bodies brought about by our minds’ engagement with a largely virtual world?\nCan the act of sharing thoughts publicly heal the separation that members of a community can feel in a society that has become increasingly divided along ideological lines in digital and virtual public discourse?\n\nThis show will open in tandem with the Mural Show opening reception in the main gallery on November 14th and will run thought December 19th. \nAbout the artists: \nMeezie Hermansen is a lifelong Cook Inlet setnetter and a small animal veterinarian with a love for the craft of writing.  This has brought her to the world of vintage typewriters.  Here\, she rediscovered the magic of seeing words appear physically in the world in real time\, with no easy editing\, resulting in a slower but more distilled writing process. \nKimberly Lorentzen grew up in rural Alaska where the village pace left plenty of time for curiosity and discovery. Whether writing\, painting\, or working in clay\, her goal is to showcase small wonders that are often missed\, to point at tiny marvels and yell\, “LOOK!” to anyone nearby. She uses whatever is at her disposal to do it.  She caught typewriter fever from her friend\, Meezie\, over long conversations about the trend toward all things fast and digital. \n

SUMMARY:The KPEN ArtHive
DESCRIPTION:The KPEN ArtHive is Back! What’s an arthive? It’s a global community-based art studio that provides free access to materials and welcoming spaces for self-directed creativity\, skill-sharing\, and community building.  This event will happen the second Saturday of each month from 9 am to 12 pm. Come and go as you please! \nThe KAC hosts the only ArtHive in Alaska and our purpose is to support local established and upcoming or new artists. It’s a great opportunity to create art\, get to know other artists\, and to get art guidance if you are looking for it. This event is free and open to the public. Children must be accompanied by an adult. All art created by you can be taken home.  For questions\, please call Diane at 503-880-1498.
