SUMMARY:Call For Art--DREAMS OF THE SUN January 2026
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n \nCall For Art: DREAMS OF THE SUN  \nArtwork submission dates: November 8th through December 19th 2025 \nExhibition Dates: January 2nd through January 30th 2026 \nOpening Reception: Friday January 2nd 2026 5–7 pm \n  \nDuring the dark winter months in Alaska\, we often reminisce of spring and summer–when the sun felt always present and real in our sky. From ancient myths to modern science\, the sun has inspired awe\, reverence\, and creativity. It gives life\, marks time\, and shapes our days with its warmth and brilliance. For our upcoming exhibition\, DREAMS OF THE SUN\, we invite artists to explore the sun in all its forms—literal\, symbolic\, emotional\, and environmental. \nThe KAC is interested in unique and original works including but not limited to: painting\, photography\, sculpture\, textile\, digital media\, installation\, and video\, etc that reminds us of our love for the light\, warmth and glow of the sun. Whether it’s golden hour landscapes\, abstract interpretations of solar energy\, personal stories of warmth and growth\, or explorations of shadow and illumination\, this show invites work that reflects the many dimensions of the sun.  \nWe prefer new art but will accept original works that have not been on exhibition in the KAC in the last 5 years. All 2D and hanging art must have traditional “ready to hang” hardware attached. If submitting work that is framed or under glass\, the surfaces must be clean and free of smudges and prints.  \n  \nArt Entry Submission form must accompany all submissions. For form: https:https://kenaiartcenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/art-entry-form-12-12-26.pdf \nArtist statements  of 250 words or less are recommended but not required and should accompany the above form at time of art submission.  \nThe KAC will use our mission statement and vision statement to guide our choice when selecting works to include in the show. The KAC does not accept works that include violence or sexually explicit nudity. See our statements here: https://kenaiartcenter.org/our-mission/ \nFor questions or more information please contact the KAC Executive Director at kenaiartcenter@gmail.com  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:JUST OUR TYPE featuring artists Meezie Hermansen and Kimberly Lorentzen
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our back gallery starting on November 14th for this two woman show titled JUST OUR TYPE. \nMeezie Hermansen and Kimberly Lorentzen will bring this interactive show to the KAC and in their words this exhibit is “intended to celebrate the written word and the themes of human experience in our community. We are together\, just our type of community…There is currently\, world-wide\, a resurgence of appreciation for the beauty of the manual typewriter as an elegant machine and of the physical experience of using it in a world that has become increasingly digital and virtual.”  \nIn the preceding months to the show opening\, be on the lookout for for staged public-use typewriters around town in coffee shops\, bookstores\, etc with invitations to share thoughts that will then be on display at this interactive exhibit. \nTheir idea was inspired by conversations asking the following questions: \n\nIf art heals\, can it heal the neglect of our physical bodies brought about by our minds’ engagement with a largely virtual world?\nCan the act of sharing thoughts publicly heal the separation that members of a community can feel in a society that has become increasingly divided along ideological lines in digital and virtual public discourse?\n\nThis show will open in tandem with the Mural Show opening reception in the main gallery on November 14th and will run thought December 19th. \nAbout the artists: \nMeezie Hermansen is a lifelong Cook Inlet setnetter and a small animal veterinarian with a love for the craft of writing.  This has brought her to the world of vintage typewriters.  Here\, she rediscovered the magic of seeing words appear physically in the world in real time\, with no easy editing\, resulting in a slower but more distilled writing process. \nKimberly Lorentzen grew up in rural Alaska where the village pace left plenty of time for curiosity and discovery. Whether writing\, painting\, or working in clay\, her goal is to showcase small wonders that are often missed\, to point at tiny marvels and yell\, “LOOK!” to anyone nearby. She uses whatever is at her disposal to do it.  She caught typewriter fever from her friend\, Meezie\, over long conversations about the trend toward all things fast and digital. \n

SUMMARY:INFUSION--Call For Art Exhibition--March 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Kenai Art Center \, the Kenai River Brewing Company and the Tuneweavers will be getting together for this 2025  juried call-for-art show and beer launch fundraiser. Every year in March the KAC and the Kenai River Brewing Company collaborate to launch a new beer and put on a great juried show. We are fortunate to have jurors Stephanie Cox\, Marco Mendoza and Jason Notter helping to put this show together. \nThis year the title of the show is INFUSION. For artists submitting artwork\, think about what INFUSION means to you creatively and visually. More info about that? Infusion is: the introduction of a new element or quality into something. A drink can be infused with an herbal extract\, or a person can be infused with happiness. A meadow can be infused with the sweet aroma of flowers or our minds can be infused with ideas and creativity. The KAC is looking for any original artwork (2-d\, 3-d\, fabric\, mixed media\, pottery\, etc) made within the last two years that hasn’t been shown in the KAC before.  Art submissions will be accepted starting Saturday February 1st through Saturday March 1st by 5 pm. All 2-d work (or any work that needs to hang) must have hanging hardware attached. All pieces must be accompanied by a KAC art entry submission form. For questions: kenaiartcenter@gmail.com. \nFirst Friday Opening Reception and new beer launch. March 7th 5 pm. Live music by the Tuneweavers. Free Event. Open to the public.

According to Susie before she ever sold any work\, she listed a painting “As a fluke…[in] a local ad and when it sold\, I began to wonder if this closed door that I had viewed with so much loss and grief\, was perhaps actually a guiding wall that if I had the courage to follow it\, would direct me to a new place where life could breathe through me once more.”  \nWe invite you to the solo show PORTRAITS OF THE KENAI to see the many glorious works by Susie Scrivner at our First Friday Opening Reception on Friday October 4th\, 5–7 pm.  Live piano by Maria Allison. Appetizers. Free event open to the Public.

SUMMARY:MOMENTUM--KAC SILENT ART AUCTION 2024
DESCRIPTION:Our September & October 2024 fundraiser will be a little bit different this year. Instead of the usual Harvest Art Auction & the Silent Art Auction\, in the back gallery we will have on exhibition MOMENTUM–KAC SILENT ART AUCTION 2024.  The Kenai Art Center has been around for 70 years….and we want to carry that momentum into the future for at least seventy more years! We have invited local artists to exhibit and offer their work at a reduced rate so you can take advantage of the opportunity to purchase amazing art at a fraction of the original cost. In the back gallery\, The silent bidding will open on Friday September 6th at 5 pm in conjunction with the First Friday Opening Reception of the Aquarelle watercolor show happening in the main gallery.  Gallery visitors will have from September 6th until October 25th to bid to own their favorite pieces. This is the main fundraising event of the year for the KAC and the proceeds will go to updating and repairing our beloved old building (new boiler\, lighting system\, new roof\, to name a few). In the past\, we have asked the participating artists to donate their work with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the art center. Because our mission is to help support local artists\, this year we felt we wanted to adhere to that mission more closely and have given the artists the option to donate 100% of the sale of their art to the KAC or they can choose to receive 30% of the auction sale of the piece they donate.  This is going to be an amazing event! First Friday Opening Reception Sept 6ht 5–7 pm. Live music by the TUNEWEAVERS! Delicous appetizers and wine will be served.  Free event and open to the public.

SUMMARY:June 9 - Live Concert: Wild Shore New Music
DESCRIPTION:Wild Shore New Music Features the Music of Joseph C. Phillips Jr.  \n  \nKenai Art Center welcomes Wild Shore New Music\, a New York-based\, Alaska-raised chamber music collective featuring composer Joseph C. Phillips Jr. on Thursday\, June 9\, 2022 at 7 p.m at the Kenai Art Center located at 816 Cook Dr\, Kenai\, AK 99611. \nThe concert is a free event with a suggested donation of $20 at the door.  \n  \nWild Shore New Music presents new chamber music in south-central Alaska and is one of the only organizations dedicated to contemporary chamber music in the state of Alaska. Wild Shore fosters collaborations between living composers\, versatile musicians from all over the U.S.\, and creative artists and residents from the state of Alaska. Founded in 2012 by three Alaska-raised musicians\, Wild Shore presents concerts\, lecture recitals\, and education workshops across Alaska and the US. This year\, Wild Shore will feature musicians from Alaska performing the works of Brooklyn-based composer Joseph C. Phillips Jr. and have a group of performers from New York and Alaska.  \n  \nThe program will feature several of Mr. Phillips’ works including Unlimited\, from his larger work Changing Same. Mr. Phillip writes that Unlimited is “about my conscious acknowledgment of my heritage in popular and contemporary music and culture\, but reflects a post-black aesthetic… Through a lens of individual experience\, Changing Same explores some of this richness\, diversity\, and complexity of blackness in America during my lifetime.” \n  \nOther works include The Spell of Vanishing Loveliness\, a piece about Mr. Phillips’ personal experience on the day the Twin Towers were attacked\, and Never Has Been Yet\, a piece for piano and narrator setting the text of Langston Hughes’ poem “Let America Be America Again.” \n  \nPerformers Includes:  \nSunrose Winslow\, voice (Homer\, AK) \nKatie Cox\, flute (Brooklyn\, NY) \nSandra Cox\, clarinet (Anchorage\, AK) \nRose Crelli\, violin (San Francisco\, CA) \nAndie Tanning\, viola (Brooklyn\, NY) \nMannfried Funk\, cello (Homer\, AK) \nKade Bissell\, percussion (Anchorage\, AK) \nScott Hansen\, piano (Fairbanks\, AK) \nJame Moore\, guitar (Princeton\, NJ) \nJoseph C.
