SUMMARY:Feels Like Home Exhibition Jan 2024--benefit for the KPBSD Students in Transition program
DESCRIPTION:KAC wants to start the 2024 New Year by giving. This Open Call show will exhibit works that reflect the FEELS LIKE HOME theme to raise money and bring awareness to the KPBSD Students in Transition program.\nWhat can the Students in Transition Program provide?\n• Immediate School Enrollment\n• Free school meal benefits\n• Transportation to and from school\n• School Supplies\n• Assistance in obtaining vital records\n• Referrals to local social service agencies and public programs \nStudents who don’t have stable housing face special challenges when it comes to school success. It is hard to learn if you are worried about your next meal\, about staying warm at night\, or about where you’ll be sleeping next. Students who frequently change schools or are frequently absent lose out on valuable learning time and often fall behind their peers.\nWhen an exhibition piece sells during the show\, the artist will be paid all of their portion of the sale\, and the gallery will donate 100% of the gallery portion of the sale of the piece to the Students In Transition program.  There will also be a donation box available all month while the show lasts if you want to help the cause.\nArt submission applications for this show will be accepted Saturday November 11th through Saturday December 16th and also one more day on Saturday December 30th 12:00–5:00 pm.  \n

DESCRIPTION:June 24th noon-3 pm\n$30 supply fee\nLimited spaces \nEver wanted to play around with spray paint and create some street art\, but didn’t know where to began? Well not to worry! Hi my name is Marco and in this workshop we will be focusing on the basics of spray paint and the usage of stencils. I will also be showing you techniques that will enhance your piece using common house hold items. Spray paint will be provided\, but you may bring any spray paint you would like to play with. Just make sure it is flat\, matte or satin paint. Gloss does not play well with this style of art. We will be painting on a 16”x20” canvas\, however if you’d like to bring your own surface to paint on such as wood or canvas it is totally up to you. DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Hummingbird Banding on the Kenai Peninsula- Where are we headed? \n \n  \nPlease join us for a presentation by Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Biologist Todd Eskelin\, as he discusses Hummingbird Banding on the Kenai Peninsula. He will describe his work banding hundreds of hummingbirds on the Kenai Peninsula\, what we know so far and what we hope to learn in the future. Some people know we have Rufous Hummingbirds breeding on the Kenai Peninsula\, but few are aware we have an increasing population of Anna’s Hummingbirds. Learn how to tell the difference between them. What can you do to attract them and should you? How close we are to having them year-round in south central Alaska? \nMarch 24\, 2023 at 5:30 pm at the Kenai Art Center (816 Cook Ave.\, Kenai\, Alaska) \nTodd’s professional interest in birds began at Lewis and Clark College in Portland\, OR. He then worked as the bander-in-charge at the fledgling Alaska Bird Observatory. After several temporary stints with the USFWS training banders and setting up and operating MAPS stations on the Alaska Peninsula\, he eventually settled at Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in 2001 where he continues to work as a Wildlife Biologist.

(No First Thursday this March\, come out Friday instead!) \nThe gallery will be filled with bird-themed artwork from our amazing creative community. \nKenai River Brewing Co. will be releasing a new bird-themed beer: Ya Yellow-bellied Sap-Sucker! \nThe Tune Weavers will be providing live music\, including some bird-themed songs\, of course! \nThe opening reception is free and open to the public as always\, but beer will be available for purchase. Proceeds from this fundraiser go towards the KAC’s ongoing building repair & renovation fund\, to continue bringing you big and wonderful changes to this historic Old Town Kenai building. What we’ve done these last couple years\, including the rear gallery/workshop room and the new gallery flooring\, is just the beginning!
