SUMMARY:CAPTURING OUR TOWN via Plein Air
DESCRIPTION:The KAC is offering twice monthly outdoor art events (June through August) that give artists a chance to get together and creatively capture the scenery\, people and feeling of the Kenai/Soldotna Area.  This project has two purposes: \n1: Offer outdoor events that support and encourage artists to create bonds within the art community. \n2. Encourage artists  to create plein air works for submission for the upcoming call for art show titled OUR TOWN scheduled for March 2027. \nAugust 22nd Location:  Soldotna Visitors Center & River Boardwalk \nTime:12:00–3:00 pm \n\nInstructions  for Artists: \nJoin local artists outside while we create art that captures a sense of where we wander\, rest\, socialize\, recreate and live. Grab your easels\, paint brushes\, paints\, camera\, sketchpad\, paper\, scissors\, glue\, or whatever you use to render scenes and spend some time outdoors with art friends capturing the unique character of Kenai and Soldotna. \nSpots in old town Kenai\, the Kenai bluffs\, the kite festival\, Soldotna Creek Park\, local historical sites and other places will be where we come together as artists and the community becomes our subject matter for “the canvas”. \nSign in at every plein air location with our event coordinator and you can be part of the group that will be invited to submit works for the March 2027 show titled CAPTURING OUR TOWN.* At this opening reception in March we will be partnering up with the Kenai River Brewing Co to launch a new beer at this annual beer launch fundraiser. \n*More opening reception and call for art details coming in the future! \nFor more detailed instructions and plein air event dates and locations:https://kenaiartcenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Capturing-OUR-TOWN-via-Plein-Air-2.pdf

SUMMARY:TWIG CROWNS AND PAPER BOATS featuring artist ABBEY ULEN
DESCRIPTION:First Friday Opening Reception September 4th. 5– 7 pm \nIn our main gallery we welcome the works of artist ABBEY ULEN in her solo show titled TWIG CROWNS AND PAPER BOATS. \nIn Abbey’s words: \nI truly believe it’s crucial to keep our sense of wonder and curiosity alive. Through this\ncollection\, I hope we’re reminded of where we began—the toys we cherished\, the\nexploration of the natural world\, the people who shaped us\, and the magical imaginings\nabout adulthood that defined our playtime.\nUsing techniques like thin\, flat paint passages contrasted with highly rendered areas\, and\nlayering of additional elements\, helps convey emotion in my work. I’m strongly inspired by\nthe styles of artists like Mary Cassatt and Andrew Wyeth\, as well as the imagery and\nstorytelling of European medieval paintings.” \nLive Music\, refreshments\, artist talk. Open to the public and all are welcome. \n \nAbbey’s show will run through September 25th.

SUMMARY:Solo Show Featuring Multi-Media Artist Kathy Matta
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in June in our main gallery to experience the multi-media works of artist Kathy Matta. \nFrom Kathy: \n“This exhibition centers on layered image-making from more than 25 years of studying lacquer traditions in China. The work explores themes of memory\, transformation\, fragility\, repair\, and the hidden structures beneath surface appearances. Some pieces are still being completed\, as the process is highly layered and time-intensive. The exhibition will include mixed media works incorporating symbolic objects such as tea cups\, tea pots\, and broken shards of old pottery\, rain jacket (rare) and porcelain. These materials carry histories of use\, ritual\, fracture\, and preservation\, becoming part of the visual language of the work. In traditional Chinese lacquer philosophy\, lacquer is often understood as something living feminine\, responsive\, and language-like. That understanding deeply informs my approach to surface\, layering\, concealment\, and the gradual emergence of meaning over time.” \nJune 4th\, 5:00–7:00 pm–First Friday Opening Reception. Live Music. Refreshments provided. This free event is open to the public.  This show will run through June 25th. \nMore details coming soon.
