Solo Show Featuring Multi-Media Artist Kathy Matta

Please join us in June in our main gallery to experience the multi-media works of artist Kathy Matta.

From Kathy:

“This exhibition centers on layered image-making from more than 25 years of studying lacquer traditions in China. The work explores themes of memory, transformation, fragility, repair, and the hidden structures beneath surface appearances. Some pieces are still being completed, as the process is highly layered and time-intensive. The exhibition will include mixed media works incorporating symbolic objects such as tea cups, tea pots, and broken shards of old pottery, rain jacket (rare) and porcelain. These materials carry histories of use, ritual, fracture, and preservation, becoming part of the visual language of the work. In traditional Chinese lacquer philosophy, lacquer is often understood as something living feminine, responsive, and language-like. That understanding deeply informs my approach to surface, layering, concealment, and the gradual emergence of meaning over time.”
